Float vs. backer board for tile shower

Many customers are surprised by the fact that we choose to float our shower installs rather than use cement board (backer board). There are many reasons for a floated surface, but the two most important are leveling the surface and moisture control.

Not all walls are straight, by floating the wall it is possible to create a level surface so that all tile will line up evenly. Even if the wall is out of level a tiny amount it will cause a gradual change in the tile size or grout joint from bottom to top.

A floated surface protects from moisture building up behind the tile. This is important in avoiding any eventual mold.

The price difference between installation using backer board vs. floated or mud wall is not that drastic, but the long term cost certainly is. When paying to have a shower remodeled it is important to consider the quality of the installation and its lifespan.
